IEP Meeting Checklist

advocacy checklist IEP Parent Resources Special Education Tips

Dear Parents, Screenshot this checklist, save it in your phone, and when meeting time rolls around, take action!

If you need to know HOW to ASK for draft copies, observations of placements, what to do with present level data and who to make sure is at your IEP meeting, JOIN ME in the Special Education Help Center and I'll give you the words you need to make things happen WITHOUT fighting the school or causing unnecessary conflict.

A key point to remember is that you are absolutely an equal IEP team member! Using this checklist you'll be prepared to take action and have conversations at the IEP table that result in helping your child have a more meaningful education. And... Never forget... NO DECISIONS have to be made at the IEP table. Stepping away from the table and returning in 5 minutes or returning in 5 days can actually result in a better outcome and teamwork than pushing through a conversation that is not going to end well for your child.

I have an IEP coming up in May. I have an Autistic son who is non verbal. He has been in Boston Ma public school since he was 3yrs old and he was at a 14 month level when he started at the Lee School he is now 6.5 yrs old and is still at a 14 month level. I took him to the Laurie Center in Lexington Ma to have a neurological psych eval and that’s how I found out he’s at a 14-month level. My husband and I were devastated to learn that he’s been with the school for 4 years and he’s still at a 14-month level. So as it stands we are trying to get him pulled out the public schools and put into a private school because we feel that the Lee School is not following his IEP and they do not listen to what we wanted for our son. It’s very frustrating… Do you have any advice for us when we go into his IEP meeting in May 2017 ?? As his parents we feel that the Lee School like I have said is not listening to anything we ask for to help our son. We asked the School to help potty train our son at 3 when he started and it was put in is IEP and he is now 6.5 yrs old going to be 7 in June. Everything that my husband I asked for to be put in our sons IEP eas not followed. Plrase help we are very frustrated about this and need some advice. Thank you so much hope to hear from you.
